Why Child Sponsorship?

When a child in our village can personally connect with an American friend, there is relationship that encourages everyone. The child receives tangible needs met that fosters personal growth and family preservation. The American friend is given a window into a world that is not common to her and usually a deeper sense of compassion and tenderness as well as personal growth. The friendship is an extremely powerful tool and blessing that goes full circle. Child sponsorship encourages family preservation which brings hope and wholeness to an entire community, our village.

Often times, education is available for children at little or no cost but they are excluded from school because they do not have shoes, uniforms or basic supplies. Sometimes the burden on the family to have them child go to school rather than shepherd the animals, carry water or gather firewood is just too much. We hope to give the child and their family a lift by providing basic necessities, share tangible help with the families as well as begin sustainable new in country opportunities for development. The relationship alone with the sponsoring family & friend is extremely motivating to the child and their family.

Our ultimate hope is that these children and their communities will come to know Jesus, if they don’t know him already. He is the only one who can truly make a lasting impact in a community, from the inside out. Just like in our culture, pride and selfishness are ugly. When it’s mixed with scarcity, it is deadly. When true and lasting love and forgiveness comes along with tangible physical help, the eternal impact is incredible.

Why “Bright Spots”?

God gave our founder an idea that was so vivid; it was like a dream or a vision of hover crafting over Ethiopia.

“As the wind and pressure blew my face and hair I could squint through the bright daylight and see a beautiful lush land full of resources passing quickly beneath me. I sensed God whispering in my ear saying…” There are Bright Spots. There are places and people to uncover. Ethiopia has everything it needs, we just need to help them uncover the hidden gems.  Our children in the village are these Bright Spots.  We have the opportunity to empower these children, to allow them to shine at their fullest potential.

Why the village we have chosen?

Our village is full of  hidden gems of talent, culture that is beautiful, and bright minds. Embrace Compassion believes God has allowed us to partner with the village leadership, like an extended family, to uncover some of the hidden gems one at a time.  This village partnership is really about the relationships that have been allowed to grow since our first visit in 2010.  There are no other sponsorship programs in this particular remote area of Ethiopia or outside help that we know of.

How do we choose our children in the program?

As an organization we choose to partner with proven leadership within the village and allow them to help us select the children.  We give preference to children who are attending school.  We have a family of choice in the village who shares in this passion of encouraging and blessing the children and they offer us incredible wisdom, cultural discretion and safety through this teamwork as each child is chosen one by one.

When we first began engaging and sharing life in the village, there were so many needs, we didn’t know where to start or who to start with.  From clean water, to food scarcity, lack of educational opportunities to medical tragedies, it was hard to know where to begin.  We found it to be very successful to work with just a few children in a comprehensive way and consistently with a long term approach rather than a scattered help to the masses.  We hope these children will in turn be the help and hope of their community for the next generations to come.  Working with children in partnership with the village leadership fosters sustainable long term development.

This is where you all come in….would you like to help uncover a gem?  Choose a Bright Spot child to connect and share love with tangibly in our village.  Message us with your preferences on age and gender and click here to complete the financial portion of your commitment.  Be prepared to send two small packages a year to your child (we give really good directions), personal notes and pictures in addition to the financial commitment.  We personally deliver these packages and carefully document the special gifts and send a thank you with beautiful pictures to you, their sponsor.  We share with our sponsors membership to a secret FB page where there is more access to personal details of the children’s lives.
